Unlike LotR there is absolutely no backstory of interest. I'm not going to say it again, okay, yes I am, this is Lord of the Rings with a twist: it isn't exciting. It didn't happen because even on those periods when I had a few hours to kill the last thing I wanted to do was read more of the Ring/Sword of Shannara. I was hoping I wouldn't have to dedicate lengthy periods of time to properly get into it to appreciate and enjoy the prose.
